Oh yes, there's supposedly a big forest near or on the big mountain, Halla-san that is pretty untouched in historic times and hosts some novel mosses! A promising exploration area for someone willing to deal with really rough terrain!

Wow, look at that Helvella! All hail ecotones,- have you looked at the ones on the Olympic Peninsula? Also I wonder about Cheju do in S. Korea.. it's pretty far south and the central mountain may be high enough to have a transition zone!

I haven't been back to the states properly in over a decade, but one place at the top of the list to visit is Hoh Rainforest!

Finding nature in the country has become tough due to development. It's about an hour's motorbike ride from the city to reach the bush, but even there, much of the land is privatized or commercialized. For instance, Ba Na Hills used to offer hiking trails and waterfalls, but now it's dominated by a large, Disneyland-like European town and cable cars, making these natural spots inaccessible. So far I've had easier times accessing bush in Malaysia and Northern Thailand. The biodiversity in the tropics is mind-blowing though! Plenty of undescribed fungi species with a high chance of discovering something "new" every foray. I do miss temperate New Zealand though and that extra layer of comfort knowing you don't need to be on guard for snakes, scorpions, and the occasional UXO!

Plus, in NZ you can watch Brokenwood season 10! ( I'm at 9) do be careful about those UXO, we Yanks left alot of them lying about and they can bloody well ruin a Kiwi's day!

I came across an old grenade in Naha, Okinawa during a foray...a bit unnerving: https://www.myconeer.com/p/mushrooms-munitions-and-centenarians (should note I'm a Yank myself (guilty)- the wife is a Kiwi :)
